We just reported to about the demise of legendary singer Manna Dey this morning. On this day, we would like to remember him for the man he was and pray that his soul rests in peace.
Manna Dey, who was born on May 1, 1919 was gifted with a voice. This was a voice that recorded more than 4000 songs in his long career in the music industry. He was popular for his hit songs in Hindi and Bengali but he also contributed to other languages too.
For his contribution to the Indian music industry, Dey was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005. He was later even honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 2007.
Dey's birth name was Prabodh Chandra Dey but was fondly called by everyone with his nickname Manna Dey. He was born into a family that influenced him with the art of music. Before he began with playback singing, he started his career as an assistant music director and grew from there.
His first playback singing was for the 1942 movie titled Tamanna and from then on he never stopped to impress us with his beautiful and melodious songs. There is a saying that says - There is nothing better than singing other than more singing. Manna Dey truly followed this and gave us so many songs with which we will always remember him. Although he has bid farewell to this world, his songs will live in our hearts.
