Malayalam movie industry has always been an inspiration for the other language movies of the country and world. Our industry can proudly own the credits of the great success of some highly popular other language movies.

Most of the Malayalam blockbusters from last few decades have been remade into the other popular industries like Tamil, Telugu, and Bollywood. But, it is a fact that most of the remakes have never managed to meet the perfection of the originals; even though they earn much bigger commercial success.

But there are some remakes, which earned immense popularity and appreciation than the originals. It usually happens with the Bollywood remakes, where both the budget and the market are on a much larger scale.

Priyadarshan is one of the most popular directors of M'town who made his own place in Bollywood, with some brilliantly crafted remakes of popular Malayalam movies. The director was harshly criticized by his fans and critics, for the excessive number of remakes in his career.

Siddique, the hitmaker of M'town has also made his Bollywood debut with the remake of his Malayalam blockbuster Bodyguard. The movie broke all the collection records and emerged as the highest grossing film of 2011.

Manichitrathazhu, the Fazil directed cult-classic movie is the most remade movie of M'town. The movie was remade into 5 languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and Hindi. The recent blockbuster Drishyam has already been remade into 4 languages.

The movie which was remade into the highest number of languages. It was remade in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali and Hindi. None of the remakes managed to beat the original.


Being one of the highest grossers of M'town, Drishyam is the only movie which owns the privilege to be remade in 4 languages within such a short period. Papanasam, the Tamil remake is running successfully at theatres.


The Siddique directed movie was remade into Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi. In Hindi, it broke all the collection records and emerged as the highest grosser of 2011.

Kadha Parayumbol

The blockbuster movie was remade into Tamil and Hindi with Rajinikanth and Shahrukh Khan replacing Mammootty in both versions respectively. But the remakes failed to make a mark.

Thenmavin Kombathu

This popular movie was remade into Tamil and Hindi. Muthu, the Tamil remake was a huge commercial success; while the Hindi remake was a box office disaster. 


The cult classic movie was remade into Tamil and Kannada in the same name and in Hindi as Garddish. All the remake versions were commercially successful.


This blockbuster love story was remade into Tamil, Kannada and Hindi; but failed to impress in all the three languages.

Meesa Madhavan

The blockbuster family entertainer was remade into Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. It was a decent success in Telugu; but failed to make a mark in Tamil and Kannada.


Traffic, the path-breaking movie of M'town, was remade into Tamil and Kannada; but went totally unnoticed. It has been simultaneously made in Hindi and Bengali. 

Bangalore Days

The movie, which has emerged as one of the highest ever grossers of Mollywood, has been remade into Tamil and Telugu. The remakes are expected to repeat the success of the original.
