Cicely Tyson Biography

Cicely Tyson was an American actress, model and a theatre artist who left her mark in Hollywood with her strong portrayal of African-American women. With her film career spanning more than seven decades, she became the recipient of Primetime Emmy Awards, Screen Guild Awards, Academy Awards and many more. She received highest civilian honour in the United States, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Cicely was born in East Harlem in 1924 to Fredericka and William Augustine Tyson. She chose film career even though opposed by her mother. After her light stint on Films and Television, she garnered critical acclaim as Rebecca in 1974 film Sounder. She was nominated for Golden Globe and Academy awards for this role. Tyson is best known for “The River Niger,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “The Help,” 

Cicely breathed her last January 28, 2021, at the age of 96.
