Hemachandra was born on 2 June, 1988, and brought up in Hyderabad. He has been learning Carnatic music since the age of 13 under the supervision of his mother V. Sasikala Swamy who is a singer by profession. Later, in the age of 18, he started learning music in the Hindustani Style under Sri. Jangaiah, retired Hindustani Lecturer in Government Music College.

He competed in Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 competition, where he was complimented for having such a unique, strong voice. He is the first ever South Indian to become the finalist of a national-level realty show. From the time he was young, Hemachandra has given many stage performances in the presence of eminent singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Kumar Sanu, and A.R. Rehman.

In the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 competition, Hemachandra was a member of Aadesh Shrivastav's "JAI HO" Gharana (House), and was a favourite of not only Aadesh himself but also the other judges. Though he was not declared the winner of the show due to lack of votes, he was considered the winner by the judges, critics, blogs etc.

Hemachandra has recorded a few playback songs in Hindi, such as "Sabse Alag" from the Bollywood film Alag along with SRGMP Challenge 2005 contestant Nihira Joshi, and Chalo Dil Daar Chalo from Himesh Reshamiya's Dil Diya Hai along with fellow SRGMP Challenge 2005 contestants, Vinit Singh and Himani Kapoor.

He has was offered a singing job from famous director Subhash Ghai to sing for his banner, Mukta Arts. Hemachandra, being from a Telugu background, he has also performed several Telugu songs, including two songs from the movie Vamsham before SRGMP 2005. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005

Right from the start of the competition, Hemachandra proved he had the right qualities to become a successful playback singer. For his audition into the show, he sang "Albela Sajan Aaye Re" from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. He was selected without any hesitations from the judges.

Throughout the first rounds of the show he received green cards, the highest card available which allows the singer to move on to the next round, and was repeatedly given positive feedback for his strong vocal quality. Hemachandra easily made it into the final 12. From this point on in the competition, the singers were eliminated by popular public vote, and not by the scores of the judges.

Although Hema gave mind-blowing performances and got amazing marks from the mentors, he was never voted by the audience. After a fantastic performance of Woh Lamhein, he was given the highest number of votes by the viewers and from then, he never looked back until top 3. Hemachandra gave several excellent performances and eventually made it into the top 3.

After giving a beautiful performance of the song "Nahin Samne" from Taal, a performance which the judges said was the best yet on the show, Hemachandra was eliminated from the show due to an overwhelming number of votes for the other two contestants, Vinit Singh and Debojit Saha, from their respective hometowns.

However, it was sure that Hema lost not because of the lack of talent but because of the lack of votes, at least from his hometown for sure.

Handsome Hyderabadi playback singer Hemachandra's debut Hindi album "HEMACHANDRA, The Debut Album" was launched in Mumbai on 1 November in a glittering function at Planet M attended by several Bollywood celebrities, including noted music director Mr. Aadesh Shrivastava and the beautiful actress Dia Mirza.
