Kantara A Legend Chapter 1 Story
Kantara: Chapter 1 is an Indian Kannada-language action thriller film written and directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the banner of Hombale Films. Serving as a prequel to the 2022 hit Kantara, it delves deeper into the mythological traditions, ancient lore, and ancestral conflict first introduced in the original film. The setting is pre-colonial coastal Karnataka during the reign of the Kadambas of Banavasi, and it explores themes of divine land guardianship, folklore, and the ritual of Bhuta Kola. The film is scheduled for release on 2 October 2025 and will be available in special formats like IMAX, 4DX, and D-Box.
Cast
The film stars Rishab Shetty in the lead role, reprising a commanding presence (apparently taking on a character with superhuman powers, a Naga Sadhu) as part of the prequel’s mythos. Alongside him, Jayaram is included in the main cast, with Rukmini Vasanth portraying Kanakavathi, and Gulshan Devaiah as Kulashekara. Other supporting actors include Rakesh Poojari.
Crew
Rishab Shetty serves as both writer and director for this project. The film is produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films. Cinematography is handled by Arvind Kashyap, and editing by Suresh. Music and background score are composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, who also worked on the original Kantara. Various production companies are involved, including Hombale Films, and several distributors for different regions.
Story Plot
The story of Kantara Chapter 1 revolves around Barme (Rishab Shetty), a shepherd from the Kantara region who emerges as a leader fighting for the rights of his tribe and their dominance in the spice trade of their land. The Kantara clan is often in conflict with the rival Bangra tribe. The region is ruled by King Vijayendra (Jayaram), Prince Kulasekhar (Gulshan Devaiah), and Princess Kanakavathi (Rukmini Vasanth). While the Kantara people struggle to secure trade rights in the Bandar area for spices, the Bangra tribe along with the King, Prince, and Princess conspire to seize the sacred land known as Eshwara Hoothota, where the Kantara tribe resides.
The film unfolds against the backdrop of dense forests, showcasing the fierce three-way battle between the tribes. Why is there conflict over the Pinjarla Deity? Why do the Kantara people protect this deity with such devotion? What drives the Bangra tribe and the rulers to take control of Eshwara Hoothota? Did the Kantara people succeed in claiming their rights over the spice trade in Bandar? How far did Barme’s romance with Princess Kanakavathi go? How did the Kantara tribe resist the atrocities of the Bangra? And in what way did Barme counter the conspiracies of the King and Princess? The answers to these questions form the gripping narrative of Kantara Chapter 1.
Production
The film is being produced through Hombale Films by Vijay Kiragandur. Rishab Shetty, for his role, underwent training in horse riding, the martial art Kalaripayattu, and sword fighting to do justice to the physicality required. A grand war sequence was filmed, involving more than 500 skilled fighters plus a total cast of nearly 3,000, shot on a 25-acre set in the mountains of Karnataka, and this sequence alone reportedly took close to 50 days. Shooting wrapped up on 7 July 2025.
Filming
Principal filming began in November 2023. The large-scale war sequences, the elaborate sets, and the physical training for the cast all indicate the film leans heavily on action embodied by mythic and folkloric spectacle. With shooting now completed as of July 2025, the film is in its final stages of post-production.
Marketing
The promotional campaign seems to have started with a first look and teaser released on 27 November 2023. The public poster (first look) was unveiled around that time, showcasing a fierce and warrior-like avatar of Rishab Shetty. The teaser / poster design was handled by Kaani Studio. Additional teasers/trailers are expected ahead of the film’s release, with one official trailer set for 22 September 2025.
OTT Rights
The digital and home media rights of Kantara Chapter 1 have been officially acquired by Amazon Prime Video in a record-breaking deal worth ₹125 crore. The film’s OTT release is now confirmed. Kantara Chapter 1 will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video from October 31st, 2025. This marks one of the biggest digital releases of the year, allowing fans to experience Rishab Shetty’s divine epic in the comfort of their homes after its blockbuster theatrical run.
