After Dharma Durai, Seenu Ramaswamy gives us another modern woman protagonist in Bharathi - the no-nonsense, straight forward career woman. For long, I have had issues with how our modern women look on screen. A 'modern' woman is dressed in western clothes, with make-up on; loud and assertive. Bharathi is a refreshing change. Kanne Kalaimaane needed more conflict to make it the rousing family drama it aspires to be, and less spoon-feeding to make it a slice-of-life drama.

Tamannaah, wearing Co-Optex handloom cotton saris and high necked collared blouses without any gaudy makeup throughout the film, has come out with a lively performance. The director has given her a pivotal role, around which the film revolves. Stalin has also effectively handled a mature role with consummate ease. Kanne Kalaimane is a run-of-the-mill film, and would have worked better if the script and narration had more clarity and focus.

The utter lack of drama and the mundane on-screen proceedings might be a dampener for someone expecting a faster pace. Seenu Ramaswamy does take on a bit too many issues — and some of them are just thrown into the dialogue — but doesn’t zoom in on anything particular. Kanne Kalaimane might be a film to pick only if you are in the mood for some slow, gentle cinema sans any major conflict.

The first part of the film travels more like a documentary about the despicable state of farmers. Kannan lectures about organic farming, higher interest for education and questions why senior citizens can't get loans. Seenu Ramasamy also lets his characters 'talk' about the NEET exam. The film is a unique romantic drama by National Award-winning director Seenu Ramasamy, which works well, despite its cliches and flaws.
