One gets a feel that hopefully Tamil films are slowly coming back to the old footage with the new releases this year.. Seedan is one such movie that seals that feeling.. it is a simple love story bordered on fantasy but handled really well by the director Subramania siva.
The story revolves around young Mahalakshmi (Ananya) an orphan who comes to Palani to work as a servant maid in Amritham Patti's(Sheela) home near Palani temple. All she earns for is a 'darshan' of the deity, Lord Muruga. But some how she never makes it to the temple although she could daily hear the sound of poojas, bhajans and the crowd from the temple while doing her chores.
The young girl shares her sorrows and worries with a picture of the idol kept in her room. Her employer is Suhasini and besides her, three other old ladies live in the house.
Mahalakshmi has a dream of marrying a man of high stature. She feels this is what her lord has in store for her and she starts believing in her dream. Like wise, when Thangam's(Suhasini) only son Mano(Krishna) arrives to spend few days with his grandmother before going abroad to pursue his studies, Maha realises he is the man of her dreams. Both of them are drawn towards each other and soon falls in love despite Ananya's reservations about their difference in status. But their happiness does not last long as Thangam, Mano's widowed mother fixes his wedding with her friend’s daughter and it is too late when Mano confesses his love to his mother. Maha and Mano decide to part ways not to hurt his mothers feelings. Maha finds it really difficult to forget her dream and strives hard to hide her grief. But there is this man Saravanan(Dhanush) living next door who understands her feelings for Mano and constantly assures her miracles do happen and dreams are achievable... Will Maha's(Ananya) dreams come true? ....
The simple story has been deftly handled. The director takes us on an emotional journey through the mind of the young orphan girl who is in love.. her insecurities, hurt, rejection, faith and happiness that anybody can relate to. It is a positive change from the super human characters and loud dialogues that we see commonly in Tamil movies these days. The cast have given their best. The lead pair gives a wonderful performance, the debutant Krishna Nair and especially Ananya as the innocent and lively is excellent. Vivek as the fake 'sanyasi', Ponvannan and Ilavarasu have done justice to their roles. Music is easy on the ears and cinematography is credible.
However, the surprise package here (apart from Ananya) was Dhanush. While citing a role description is tempting here, I’m wary of imparting too many spoilers. His role is THE pivotal role within the movie and the central idea of the film itself. For now, it would suffice to say that his role is the proverbial good Samaritan role, that in Bollywood would be accorded with the appearance of a hugely successful guest star – a la Salman Khan in Baghban. But here, it is played by this complete novice… a nobody. And yet, he manages to steal the show.
On the whole we rate the movie good.
In this Seedan film, Krishna Nair, Ananya played the primary leads.
