Adipurush Story

Adipurush is a mythological 3D movie directed by Tanhaji fame Om Raut. The movie casts Prabhas, Kriti Sanan, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh, and Devdutta Nage playing the main lead role in this movie. The music was composed by Ankit Balhara, Sanchit Belhara, Ajay Godavale, and Atlu Godavale while the cinematography was done by Karthik Palani and it is edited by Ashish Mhatre, and Apurva Motiwale. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar. Under T Series Films, Uv Creations Banners.

Story Plot

Adipurush story deals with the tale of the Hindu deity Lord Rama and his battle against the demon king Ravana. The movie is an adaptation of the Indian epic "Ramayana" and promises to present a fresh and visually stunning interpretation of the timeless story. The plot revolves around the central conflict between Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and Ravana, the powerful demon king who abducts Rama's wife, Sita. The story follows Rama's journey as he embarks on a heroic quest to rescue Sita and restore peace and righteousness in the world.

The film explores the themes of love, honor, duty, and the triumph of good over evil. It delves into the complex relationships between the characters, including Rama's unwavering devotion to his wife Sita, the unwavering loyalty of his brother Lakshmana, and the relentless pursuit of power by Ravana.

Production

The film was officially announced on 18 August 2020 through a promotional poster. Directed by Om Raut, known for his previous film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020). Om Raut was inspired by the 1992 Japanese film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama and aimed to adapt the Ramayana with modern technology. Prabhas was cast as Lord Rama, and the production company T-Series Films came on board for the project. Adipurush is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made, with an estimated budget of ₹500 crore. Approximately ₹250 crores were allocated for visual effects, and the film was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages, with 3D filming.

Casting

Prabhas portrays the role of Lord Rama, named Raghava in the film. Saif Ali Khan, who previously worked with Om Raut in Tanhaji, was cast as the antagonist Ravana, named Lankesh. Kriti Sanon was confirmed to play the role of Sita, after various rumors regarding other actresses being approached for the part. Sunny Singh joined the cast to play the character of Lakshmana, Lord Rama's younger brother.

Filming

The motion capture shoot for Adipurush began on 19 January 2021. The film's mahurat shot and formal launch took place on 2 February 2021 in Mumbai. Principal photography commenced on the same day, despite a massive fire accident at the filming location. The filming was completed on 10 November 2021, with Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon wrapping up their portions.

Marketing

The film's teaser was released on 2 October 2022 but faced criticism for its visual effects and CGI. The trailer, released on 9 May 2023, showcased improved visual effects and received a better response. An action trailer was later released on 6 June 2023.

Theatrical Release

Adipurush was initially scheduled for release on 11 August 2022 but was postponed multiple times. The film was released in theaters on 16 June 2023 in Hindi and Telugu, with dubbed versions in Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. It was previously postponed to rework the visual effects following the negative response to the teaser. The film's world premiere at the Tribeca Festival was canceled, but it will still be showcased at the festival on 15 and 17 June. The film was also originally planned for an IMAX release but was later canceled due to scheduling conflicts with another film.

OTT Release

The post-theatrical digital distribution rights were bagged by Amazon Prime Video.
