M. S. Umesh was one of Kannada cinema’s most respected and beloved comedians, known for his natural humour, expressive personality, and performances that entertained audiences for more than six decades. Beginning his journey as a child theatre artist and later becoming a familiar face in over 350 films, Umesh carved a special place in the hearts of viewers with his memorable comedy roles and warm screen presence. His effortless dialogue delivery and down-to-earth comedic style made him a favourite across generations, earning him recognition as one of the finest character actors and comedians in the Kannada film industry. M. S. Umesh was born on 24 April 1945 in Mysore (then Kingdom of Mysore), to parents A. L. Srikantayya and Nanjamma. From a very early age, Umesh was drawn to the theatre world. By the age of four, he had already started acting on stage, joining the troupe of the veteran theatre artist K. Hirannaiah. Later, he also became part of the renowned theatre company of Gubbi Veeranna Company before transitioning into cinema. Umesh’s film debut came in 1960 with the movie Makkala Rajya, directed by B. R. Panthulu. Although his early film career didn’t immediately take off, his fortunes changed in the late 1970s, especially with the movie Katha Sangama (1977), which gave him a significant boost and helped revive his presence in cinema. Over time, he became a dependable character and comedy actor. By the end of his career, he had acted in more than 350 films. What made Umesh stand out was his natural flair for comedy: his distinctive dialogue delivery, expressive facial expressions and impeccable comic timing endeared him to audiences across generations. Some of his most memorable films include Nagara Hole (1978), Guru Shishyaru (1981), Apoorva Sangama (1984), Shruthi Seridaaga (1987), and especially the comedy hit Golmaal Radhakrishna (1990), where his role as “Sithapathi” became iconic and his catch-phrase (often quoted by fans) remains popular even now. Among his later roles, his performance in Venkata in Sankata (2007) under director Ramesh Aravind is also fondly remembered by viewers from newer generations. Over his decades-long career, Umesh shared screen space with multiple generations of Kannada cinema stars, contributing significantly to both mainstream and comedic cinema. His talents were recognised with awards too: in 1975, he won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Katha Sangama. Later, in 2013, he was honoured with the Karnataka Nataka Akademi Award in recognition of his contribution to theatre. Behind the laughter, Umesh’s life had its share of personal heartbreak. He lost his son (named Chandrashekhar) at a young age, the boy died in a tragic railway accident while playing cricket. It was a tragedy Umesh rarely spoke about publicly, even though it deeply affected him. Even in his later years, Umesh remained passionate about his craft. Until his health deteriorated, he was reportedly preparing for a new television series. His calm humour, gentle, relatable, and rooted in everyday life, resonated with multiple generations of audiences, making him a beloved figure whose style was subtle, honest, and unpretentious. Death Sadly, on 30 November 2025, M. S. Umesh passed away at the age of 80 in Bengaluru. He had been admitted to the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology after a fall at home on October 10, which led to the discovery that he was suffering from stage-four liver cancer, a condition that had already spread to other organs. Despite treatment efforts, his health declined, and he passed away early Sunday morning. His funeral was held the same day, with many fans, film personalities and political leaders paying their respects.
