Salaar Story

Salaar is a high-voltage action drama film written and directed by Prashanth Neel and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films. The film stars Prabhas in the titular role, along with Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and Jagapathi Babu. Salaar movie was announced in December 2020, with principal photography commencing in January 2021 near Godavarikhani, Telangana. The music was composed by Ravi Basrur while the cinematography was done by Bhuvan Gowda and it is edited by Ujwal Kulkarni and Shashank. The film is produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films banner.

Story

Deva alias Salaar (Prabhas) works in the border areas of Assam, dealing with the challenges there. The situation takes a tumultuous turn when few people kidnaps Adhya (Shruti Haasan) from that region. Adhya, who works as a teacher there, endeavors to uplift the oppressed, and Deva becomes her protector. Following this, Varadaraj Mannaar (Prithviraj Sukumaran) who is friend of Deva comes to meet him after 25 years.

Why is Deva lives in Assam with his mother? How did the Khansaar region transform into a separate kingdom within the boundaries of India? Varadaraj Mannaar faces challenges in governing his region, and why is he compelled to establish a ceasefire agreement during voting for the polls? What prompts Deva to come out during voting? Why does Varadaraj Mannaar leave his homeland, and how does Deva become a catalyst for change during the ceasefire? Who emerges victorious in the elections? What is the link Deva has to the Shouryanga festival? Answers to these questions constitute the storyline of this film, titled Salaar.

Cast and Crew

The film marks the first collaboration between director Prashanth Neel and Prabhas, as well as Neel's first Telugu venture. Prabhas described his character as extremely violent, something he has not done before. Although reports were claiming that the film is a remake of Neel's debut film "Ugramm," the director clarified that "Salaar" is an original story written specifically for Prabhas.

The film's casting includes Shruti Haasan in a leading role, with Madhu Guruswamy and Easwari Rao playing pivotal roles. Jagapathi Babu joined the cast as well. Prithviraj Sukumaran, a Malayalam actor, entered talks to play a crucial role in the film, and his involvement was confirmed later on. Sriya Reddy is also part of the cast.

Filming

Salaar's shoot began in January 2021 in the coal mines near Godavarikhani. The shoot progressed with schedules in Hyderabad, and about 30% of the filming was completed by March 2022. However, filming was temporarily halted due to the release of Prabhas' "Radhe Shyam" and Neel's "K.G.F: Chapter 2." It resumed in June 2022, including a 20-minute-long action sequence shot in the middle of the sea.

Release Date

Salaar movie initially announced its theatrical release on 28 September 2023 in Telugu, along with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam languages and finally the movie hit the theaters on December 22nd, 2023.

Distribution

Theatrical distribution rights have been acquired by UV Creations for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and by KRG Studios for Karnataka. In North America, the film is distributed by Moksha Movies and Prathyangira Cinemas.

Salaar movie censored with "A" certificate and runtime locked for 2 hours, 55 minutes and 22 seconds.

Salaar OTT Release

Rebel star Prabhas - Prashanth Neel's Salaar released worldwide on Dec 22nd, 2023 on the eve of Sankranti in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi. Renowned streaming platform Netflix has acquired the digital rights for Salaar, and streaming started from January 20th, 2024.

Box-Office

Salaar movie made a pre-release business of 270 crores before release, and on opening day, it made 178.7 crores. Overall, Salaar movie collected 500 Cr worldwide in just 6 days.
