Kollywood superstar Vijay expressed his interest and excitement in joining the politics recently. Rumours of his interest about politics mentioned that the actor has a plan to make great entry to the politics in the next year. But the actor didn't make an official announcement yet. On other hand, many actors in Indian cinema like Smiti Irani, Jayalalitha, Vijaykanth, Hemamalini made their great entry into electoral politics before Vijay. From Smriti Irani to Suresh Gopi, here is a list of popular actors in Indian cinema who tried their hands at politics.

Smriti Irani

Born into a Marathi-Punjabi-Bengali family, Smriti started her acting career as a model in 1994. After achieving a successful modelling career, later she started acting in Tv serials. She is best known for her portrayal in the popular Tv serial  "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi". For performance in the Tv serial, she won five ITA Award for Best actress and four Indian Telly Award. After surprising her fans and followers, she announced her political entry in 2003 and joined in the Bharathiya Janatha Party. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, she contested from Amethi against the Congress President Rahul Gandhi but lose the election. In 2019, she fiercely fought and defeated Gandhi and reached Lok Sabha. She is currently serving as the Union Minister for Women & Child Development and Minister for Minority Affairs.

Bhaghawat Maan

Bhaghawat maan made his acting debut in the 1994 release Punjabi movie. He also essayed a prominent role in the National Award winning movie  "Main Maa Punjab Dee"  in 1998 , directed by Balwant Dullat. Besides acting, Bhaghawat maan is a comedian and singer. Popularly known as Comedy King, Bhaghawat maan, also did comedy albums and programmes. In 2014, Bhaghawat maan joined in Aam Aadmi Party and he was elected to Lok Sabha after defeating against former union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. He is currently serving as the Chief Minister of Punjab. 

Kirron Kher

Actress Kirron Kher  who has built a successful political career  after she  joined in the political party Bharatiya Janata Party. She contested in the Lokh  Sabha Election in 2014 and declared as winning BJP candidate from Chandigarh constituency. Being an actress , Kirron Kher  also worked with many prominent film makers and big stars in the Hindi and Punjabi film industry. She won a National Award for Best Actress for the film Bariwali in 1999.

Vijayakanth

The popular Tamil actor and politician Vijayakanth launched his political party in Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK in 2005. He resigned from the post of president of South Indian Actors Association after he formed his own political party.  He also severd as a MLA twice, representing the constituency of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam respectively. Vijaykanth who is also known as 'Captain' by his fans and  acted in more than 150 movies in Tamil.

Roja Selvamani

Roja Selvamani began his journey in Telugu films in the 1990's and  quickly earned her spot in the big leads of the film industry. Apart from acting in Telugu cinema, she also appeared in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Roja made her  political debut in 2004 as a Congress candidate from Nagari constituency and won as MLA from Nagiri in 2014 general elections. She has twice won 2014 and 2019 Assembly elections as an MLA from Nagari on YSRCP ticket.

Suresh Gopi

Suresh Gopi entered politics in 2016 by joining Bharatiya Janatha Party. In 2019, Suresh Gopi  contested in General election and losted his seat to T.N.Prathapan. In 2016, he was  nominated  by the BJP to the Rajya Sabha under the art category. Suresh Gopi was the first actor from the Kerala Sate  nominated to the Upper House of  Parliament.
