Piku Story

Piku is a quirky roller coaster ride of a crazy father-daughter relationship essayed by Amitabh and Deepika, along with Irrfan in a pivotal author backed role. Story in detail: Piku (Deepika Padukone) is a working girl in a cosmopolitan city. An architect by profession, she is a simple, Independent and strong girl from Delhi. She is grounded and rooted to what matters most - family... and in this case, her father, who she looks after. Piku: Critics Review Piku is the kind of girl who doesn't shy away from responsibilities. The film takes audiences through the ups and downs and everyday problems she faces with her father. Baba - Bhaskhor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan) is Piku's father. He is retired and spends most of his time obsessing about age-related issues. He is stubborn, dramatic and comes with his own set of problems... he has very specific, but unconventional, likes and dislikes and fixed ideologies. He is not a man who enjoys socialising. Baba is not the hero here, but the film takes a look into his household. Rana - He (Irrfan Khan) is the outsider who has nothing to do with the Banerjee family but gets entangled with them and all their drama. He is the owner of a taxi service, who comes with his own quota of problems and then happens to get some more, when he finds himself entangled in the Banerjee family. Things take a funny turn once Rana gets involed with the family. When Bhashkor emotionally blackmails Piku to take a road trip from Delhi to Kolkata, the owner of the local cab service Rana (Irrfan Khan) has no choice but to drive them personally since none of his drivers are willing to endure Piku or her eccentric father. During this undesired road trip they learn to deal with each other's moods and idiosyncrasies and it reveals more than Bhashkor's bathroom habits. What follows is a heady mix of motion, emotion & commotion which culminates as Piku and Bhaskhor return to their roots in Kolkata, giving us an insight into the father daughter relationship where Bhaskor's irritating yet endearing demeanour and Piku's equally headstrong nature may always be at loggerheads but this seemingly dysfunctional relationship is bonded by an understated and an unconditional love that leaves you wanting more.

It is said that simplicity is the ultimate sophisticaton and the movie Piku perfectly validates the saying. Bollywood film-making has pleasantly changed many folds in the recent time and we are lucky to be witnessing that. Gone are the days when it was assumed that the entertainment quotient of any Bollywood movie depends on sex, action, masala and Piku is a fine example of that. Piku is a simple and funny movie which offers you a chance to get entertained with your entire family, as you don't have to fear about any adult content popping up.

One has to applaud the way in which Shoojit has handled the sweet and simple tale of PIKU. This film will definitely go down as one of the films in his repertoire that demands a superlative applause. After VICKY DONOR, MADRAS CAFE and now with PIKU, Shoojit proves his supremacy as a storyteller. Even though the film is good in overall perspective, the climax is sudden and does seem to be left incomplete. On the whole, PIKU is a must watch this season as it brings back the memories of the legendary directors Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chatterjee and likes. This is a film that shall grow with word of mouth.

Finally, there’s a Bollywood movie that doesn’t present an hyperbolic pitch-perfect image of a father and his daughter. Just like any regular — dysfunctional to an outsider — family, they fight, make-up and move on in life. Padukone and Bachchan are naturals as they display an over-familiarity that only family members who live together can display. But that’s not to say that Piku is flawless. It’s no cliffhanger — the film puts a smile on your face primarily because of the collective prowess of its principal cast. Watch Piku if you are in the mood to watch a movie that’s all heart. There are no larger-than-life heroes, dramatic transformations or neatly-tied endings. Still, Piku works its magic because it steers clear from the usual trappings.

The new-age films coming out in Bollywood are expanding the parameters of commercial cinema. And in this process, some truly engaging and entertaining films are finding a universal audience. Shoojit Sircar’s Piku is a fine example of the triumph of this process. A film like Piku is inventive and unconventional but mainstream. You wish there were some more drama in the second half to elevate it further. Piku is one of the best films of the year. It’s a must-watch for the thundering trio of Bachchan, Padukone and Khan.
