Govardhan Asrani Biography

Goverdhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, was born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. He completed his schooling in Jaipur and later graduated from Rajasthan College. With a passion for acting, he moved to Mumbai and joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he received formal training in acting.

Career

Asrani began his film career in the mid-1960s and went on to become one of Bollywood’s most celebrated comic actors. He gained immense popularity with roles in films like Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, Chupke Chupke, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Sholay, where his portrayal of the comical jailer remains iconic. Over his illustrious career spanning more than five decades, Asrani acted in over 350 films and worked with legends such as Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dharmendra. He also directed a few films and appeared in several television shows, earning a special place in the hearts of audiences for his impeccable comic timing and expressive performances.

Personal Life

Asrani was married to actress Manju Bansal, who appeared in a few Hindi films. The couple has a son. Despite his fame, Asrani maintained a humble and private personal life. He shared a close friendship with late superstar Rajesh Khanna and was deeply respected in the film fraternity for his warmth and professionalism.




Death

Veteran actor Asrani passed away on October 20, 2025, around 3:30 p.m. He had been admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days earlier due to fluid accumulation in his lungs. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated, and he breathed his last on Monday afternoon. His death marks the end of an era in Indian comedy cinema.
