Coolie Story

Coolie is an action thriller film in which Superstar Rajinikanth teams up with the most wanted director, Lokesh Kanagaraj. After months of speculation, it has finally been confirmed. The film will be produced by Kalanidhi Maran under the banner of Sun Pictures. The announcement was made on September 11, 2023, and fans of both the actor and director are eagerly awaiting more details.

Anirudh Ravichander, the die-hard Superstar fan, is all set to create magic with his music for this movie. His soulful melodies and powerful background score will set the tone for the film, while Anbariv Master's high-octane action sequences will leave you on the edge of your seat. Vishnu Edavan, who has worked with Loki since the beginning of his career, would undoubtedly write powerful lyrics for Superstar in this film.

Anu Vardhan, the legendary costume designer for Rajinikanth, will carry on her legacy in this movie as well. The expectation is that Philomin Raj, the editor, and Sathyan Sooryan, the cinematographer, will also be part of this film. The film's poster has already created a buzz among the audience, with many wondering if the background colour of the poster is a hint that the film can be expected under LCU.

Story

At Visakhapatnam harbour, smuggler Simon Xavier runs a gold and luxury watch trafficking racket with his trusted aide Dayalan “Dayal.” Simon’s son, Arjun, refuses to join the crime world and becomes a customs officer. When an undercover cop posing as a coolie is killed by Dayal, a ₹2 crore bounty is announced to expose another mole within the gang.

In Chennai, Devaraj “Deva,” who runs a strict boarding house, learns about his friend Rajasekhar’s mysterious death. Initially reported as a heart attack, Deva’s investigation reveals chest trauma. Rajasekhar, once broke, had invented an electric chair for animals but was forced by Simon to adapt it for killing humans. Preethi, Rajasekhar’s daughter, becomes a target for knowing the machine’s operation, but Deva saves her and joins the gang.

As Deva digs deeper, he uncovers Simon’s sinister organ-trafficking operation. Tensions rise when Dayal kidnaps Preethi and blackmails Deva. Meanwhile, Kalyani, Dayal’s wife and Arjun’s secret lover, is revealed as Dayal’s undercover partner. Preethi later unknowingly reveals to Deva that she is his daughter.

The climax unfolds on a ship where Deva reveals his past as a union leader who once killed Simon’s father. After an intense duel, Deva kills Simon, rescues Preethi, and defeats Dayal, ending the brutal empire.

Lokesh Kanagaraj talks about Coolie

Kanagaraj said that Coolie is a standalone film set in Chennai and that he is excited to work on it as it is a departure from his previous universe-based films. He also said that the film is an experimental attempt for him and that he will be working on the pre-production for the next 4 months before going on floors in March 2024.

The director also said that he will not be rushing the project and that he will look to finish the film first before making any release date announcements. Shooting begins in March 2024, after Rajinikanth completes his film with TJ Gnanavel.

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj, in a recent interview, confirmed that the official trailer of Coolie will be unveiled on August 2, 2025. He also revealed that there will be no teaser or other promotional content before the trailer launch, keeping the spotlight firmly on the big reveal. The trailer will be released during the film’s grand pre-release event, scheduled at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on the same day. Several key cast members are expected to attend, making it a star-studded evening and heightening the buzz ahead of the film’s release.

The highly anticipated trailer of Coolie was officially unveiled on August 2, 2025, during a grand audio launch event held at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. Premiering at 7 PM, the trailer sent waves of excitement across social media and fan communities. Packed with high-octane action, vintage Rajinikanth-style mass moments, and glimpses of a stellar ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Upendra, the trailer promises an intense cinematic experience. Coolie was released on 14 August 2025. Originally made in Tamil, the film will also hit screens in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi through dubbed versions, ensuring a wider pan-Indian reach.
