V. Prakash Kumar and Kishore would be the film's composer and editor respectively. On January 2014, Bala decided to call Ilaiyaraaja in to the project to replace G. V. Prakash. Early reports had suggested that Shriya Saran had been signed on to play the leading female role of a Karagattam dancer, but it was later chosen to offer Varalaxmi Sarathkumar the leading role. The team also selected Hindi film maker Satish Kaushik to portray a character in the film. Soundtrack The soundtrack has been composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Tharai Thappattai Critics Review

Filmibeat.com
The movie revolves around Sooravali, who is a folk dancer, played by Varalaxmi to perfection. A Bala film can never falter when it comes to performances and Tharai Thappattai is no different. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar may walk away with a National Award and more for her role in Tharai Thappattai. Sasikumar has largely underplayed his character (in a good way) and should be appreciated for letting a female lead take the center stage. Overall View: Tharai Thappattai could've been much better had Bala focused more on the latter half of the movie, in which he seems to have forgotten about his steadfast female lead.

Bala essentially keeps making the same movie. He’s, repeatedly, to darkness, and love is but another stop on the tortuous road to doom. Plus, the highly stylised performances, which don’t seem to come from the actor so much as the director. Watch Sooravali, played by Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. And for long-time fans, there are amusing flashbacks — to Kuyila pudichu, to En purushan dhaan. The latter plays as a ringtone in a sequence that’s the exact reversal of the doormat situation inGopurangal Saaivadhillai — here, the husband is pressing his wife’s feet. Tell me again, why doesn’t Bala make comedies?

After the heart-wrenching tale of enslaved tea workers of the pre-independence era in Paradesi, National award-wining director Bala takes up the cause of folk artists in his latest film, Thaarai Thappattai. Director Bala has once again scripted an intense tale of human pain and suffering that is infused with his trademark humour, great music and excellent performances. Thaarai Thappattai has all the elements that you expect from the brilliant director and while it may not appeal to all, it is definitely worth a watch.

Bala's strength lies in the characterizations of his lead character and being a taskmaster he invariably extracts career defining performances from his actors. It is a Varalakshmi show all the way and she has done full justice to her character name Sooravali as she has truly performed like a tornado. An excellent dancer, Varu has shown different emotions through her dance movements. Verdict : Watch it for Sasikumar and Varalakshmi in the first half and the weak hearted better walk away at the interval.
