Top Tamil Actors Who Launched Their Own Political Party

AIADMK

M.G. Ramachandran, a legendary Tamil actor and philanthropist, founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972 after splitting from the DMK due to ideological differences and corruption allegations. His immense popularity as a film hero portraying justice-driven roles helped AIADMK rise rapidly. MGR became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1977 and served until his death in 1987. His welfare schemes for the poor and charismatic leadership cemented AIADMK as a major Dravidian party in Tamil Nadu politics.

AIADMK 

Jayalalithaa, a celebrated Tamil actress and protégé of MGR, took over AIADMK after his demise in 1987. DMDK

Tamil actor Vijayakanth, popularly known as “Captain,” launched the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in 2005. In the 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, DMDK emerged as the main opposition, a historic achievement for a new party. However, its influence declined after 2016. Versatile actor Kamal Haasan entered politics by founding Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) in 2018.
