Balaji was born on February 15, 1970, in Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu, to M. Baskar and Meenarani. His father, M. Baskar, is a celebrated director, producer, and founder of Oscar Movies. Balaji completed his postgraduate degree in Commerce from New College, Chennai.
He began his film career as an assistant director to Thalaivasal Selva, working on projects like Shisya and Pudhayal. In 1995, Balaji made his debut as a producer with the film Vishnu, starring Vijay and Sangavi, directed by S. A. Chandrasekar. This film was notable as it marked the first time Thalapathy Vijay acted in a film produced outside his family banner.
In 2000, Balaji produced Kadal Rojavey, featuring Vishnu and Pooja Kumar, directed by K. R. with music by Ilayaraja. The movie introduced Pooja Kumar, who later gained fame through Vishwaroopam.
Currently, Balaji is producing Udhari, which is under production. The film stars Vinoth Kishan and Padmapriya, directed by Sakthi Krishna, with music composed by Bala Bharathi.
