Kamini Kaushal Biography

Kamini Kaushal, born Uma Kashyap on February 24, 1927, in Lahore, British India, was the youngest of six children. Her father, Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap, was a renowned botanist. She completed her B.A. (Honours) in English Literature from Kinnaird College, Lahore, and gained early acting experience through radio plays, which led to her discovery by filmmaker Chetan Anand.

Acting Debut

She made her film debut in Neecha Nagar (1946), directed by Chetan Anand, who gave her the screen name Kamini. The film became the first Indian movie sent to the Cannes Film Festival and won international recognition, earning her an award at the Montreal Film Festival.

Career Highlights

Kamini Kaushal worked with Bollywood legends like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, and Ashok Kumar. She appeared in popular films such as Shaheed (1948), Arzoo (1950), Poonam (1953), and Biraj Bahu (1954), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the latter. She continued to act in character roles in later years, featuring in films like Chennai Express (2013) and Kabir Singh (2019).

Personal Life

After the tragic death of her elder sister in 1947, Kamini married her brother-in-law, B.S. Sood, a chief engineer at the Bombay Port Trust, in 1948 and moved to Bombay. She also explored creative pursuits like children’s puppet shows and storytelling.

Veteran actress Kamini Kaushal passed away on November 14, 2025, at the age of 98 due to age-related health issues, leaving behind a legacy of over seven decades in Indian cinema.
