Arunachalam Sakunthala (1 November 1939 – 17 September 2024), popularly known as C. I. D. Sakunthala, was a prolific Indian actress who appeared in over 600 Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam films. She earned her stage name after debuting in the thriller CID Shankar (1970), directed by R. Sundaram, and went on to become a sought-after vamp, dancer, and character actor across South Indian cinema. Early Life Born in Arisipalayam, Salem, Sakunthala was named after the classic Tamil film Sakuntalai. Her father worked in Thiruverumbur, and she trained in classical dance, performing alongside legends Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini in Chennai. Drawn to the stage, she appeared in the play Suryan Merkkeyum Uthikkum before transitioning to screen work. Early on, she took on item numbers, vamp roles, and supporting parts—ultimately earning lead and heroine roles as her reputation grew. Film Career Sakunthala’s breakthrough came as an actress in CID Shankar, after which she was in high demand. She delivered memorable performances in Sivaji Ganesan classics such as Padikkadha Methai, Kai Koduttha Dheivam, Thavapudhalavan, Vasantha Maligai, and Neethi. Equally at ease as a villainess or comedian, she featured in hits like Dharisanam, En Annan, Kattila Thottila, and Thirumalai Thenkumari. Her versatility led to collaborations with top stars including M. G. Ramachandran and Kamal Haasan, before she later shifted to television work. Personal Life The youngest of seven children, Sakunthala grew up in a large joint family and remained devoted to her roots. After decades in front of the camera, she quietly retired from films but continued to act on television. Death On 17 September 2024, at age 84, she passed away in Bengaluru. Her funeral brought together generations of fans and colleagues who remembered her for her vivacious spirit, dynamic screen presence, and pioneering contributions to South Indian cinema.
