Early Life & Education Born on 22 August 1934 in Jabalpur , Madhya Pradesh, to a Marathi Brahmin family, Achyut Potdar spent his childhood in Indore . He completed his post-graduation in economics in 1961, topping his class and earning a university gold medal. Career Before Films Began his professional journey as a professor in Rewa , Madhya Pradesh. Joined the Indian Army through an Emergency Commission and retired as a Captain in 1967. Then embarked on a corporate career at Indian Oil Corporation , where he worked for nearly 25 years before retiring in 1992 at age 58. Entry into Acting His foray into acting began as a passionate hobby — participating in theatrical plays and cultural events during his corporate tenure. At the age of 44 , he made his film debut with Aakrosh (1980), launching a beloved career in Bollywood as a reliable character actor. Filmography & Roles Over four remarkable decades, Potdar appeared in over 125 films , including iconic titles like: Ardh Satya , Aakrosh , Parinda , Tezaab Rangeela , Vaastav , Parineeta , Hum Saath Saath Hain Lage Raho Munna Bhai , Dabangg 2 , Ferrari Ki Sawaari , and Ventilator He became especially memorable for his cameo as a professor in 3 Idiots (2009) , delivering the viral line “Arey, kehna kya chahte ho?” — a phrase that continues to resonate across social media. Television & Theatre Achyut enriched the small screen with roles in: Bharat Ek Khoj , Wagle Ki Duniya , Mrs Tendulkar , Pradhanmantri , Aandolan , Majha Hoshil Na and more. Final Chapter Achyut Potdar passed away on 18 August 2025 at Jupiter Hospital in Thane due to age-related health complications. His funeral took place on 19 August 2025 in Thane, followed by widespread tributes from fans, colleagues, and the film fraternity.
