Early Life & Education



  • Born on 22 August 1934 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, to a Marathi Brahmin family, Achyut Potdar spent his childhood in Indore.




  • He completed his post-graduation in economics in 1961, topping his class and earning a university gold medal.



Career Before Films



  • Began his professional journey as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.




  • Joined the Indian Army through an Emergency Commission and retired as a Captain in 1967.




  • Then embarked on a corporate career at Indian Oil Corporation, where he worked for nearly 25 years before retiring in 1992 at age 58.



Entry into Acting



  • His foray into acting began as a passionate hobby — participating in theatrical plays and cultural events during his corporate tenure.




  • At the age of 44, he made his film debut with Aakrosh (1980), launching a beloved career in Bollywood as a reliable character actor.

  • Over four remarkable decades, Potdar appeared in over 125 films, including iconic titles like:




    • Ardh Satya, Aakrosh, Parinda, Tezaab

  • He became especially memorable for his cameo as a professor in 3 Idiots (2009), delivering the viral line “Arey, kehna kya chahte ho?” — a phrase that continues to resonate across social media.
