Bangalore Saroja Devi , born on January 7, 1938, in Bengaluru (formerly Mysore State), was a celebrated Indian actress whose career spanned seven decades across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi cinema. She made her debut as a lead heroine at just 17 with the Kannada classic Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955), later shining in Telugu (Panduranga Mahatyam, 1957), Tamil (Nadodi Mannan, 1958), and Hindi (Paigham, 1959) films. Affectionately known as "Abhinaya Saraswathi" in Kannada and "Kannadathu Paingili" in Tamil, she appeared in an astounding over 160 consecutive films as the heroine between 1955 and 1984, a record-setting feat. Renowned for her grace, expressive range, and dance skills, she worked with stars like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, and NTR, earning prestigious honors such as the Padma Shri (1969), Padma Bhushan (1992), an honorary doctorate, and multiple state awards. Beyond her acting career, Saroja Devi was deeply respected for her philanthropic efforts and cultural advocacy. Even after personal tragedy ,the loss of her husband Sri Harsha in 1986, she remained active in public life, representing the essence of dignity and resilience through decades. Sadly, July 14, 2025, marks the end of an era as B. Saroja Devi passed away at her home in Malleswaram, Bengaluru, following complications due to natural causes. She was 87 years old. Her departure leaves a profound void in South Indian cinema, but her legacy continues to inspire generations.
