Karan Singh Tyagi is a Harvard-educated lawyer-turned-filmmaker best known for directing the 2025 historical drama Kesari Chapter 2 , starring Akshay Kumar. The film explores the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the intense legal and political aftermath that followed. Drawing from his deep legal expertise, Tyagi approached the subject with rigorous research and a commitment to presenting a historically accurate and truthful narrative. Early Life & Education Karan Singh Tyagi was born around 1985–1986 in Meerut, India. He studied law at Government Law College, Mumbai , where he began developing an interest in global legal systems and historical cases. He later earned his LL.M. from Harvard Law School , further strengthening his academic foundation. Tyagi is qualified to practice law as a member of both the New York State Bar and the Bar Council of India . Career Transition Before entering filmmaking, Tyagi built a successful legal career working with major international law firms in Paris and New York . In 2015, driven by a passion for storytelling, he took a sabbatical in Mumbai to explore cinema. During this period, he worked as an assistant director on Vishal Bhardwaj’s film Rangoon , gaining hands-on experience in filmmaking. Filmmaking Journey & Kesari Chapter 2 Karan Singh Tyagi’s legal training and research-oriented mindset deeply shaped his debut film Kesari Chapter 2 . The film deals not only with the tragedy of Jallianwala Bagh but also with the O’Dwyer v. Nair libel case , which highlighted the political tensions and propaganda following the massacre. For the film, Tyagi undertook exhaustive research, studying archival material, survivor testimonies, historical accounts, and legal documents. Industry peers, including producer Karan Johar, praised his dedication to authenticity and detail. Tyagi’s goal with the film was to challenge long-standing colonial narratives, highlight the truth about the peaceful protestors, and present a more accurate representation of the events that shaped India’s freedom struggle.
