days agoRaviAtharvaa Murali's Kanithan is a decent action thriller with some well etched out action sequences, intelligent tit for tat game and boring rom-com portions along with plenty of borefest songs. TN Santhosh, director of Kanithan seems to have tweaked his master AR Murugadoss' Thuppakki. The difference is that protagonist is a TV reporter and not a DIA specialist. Instead of sleeper cells, we have fake document gang and as usual, the heroine is a 'loose ponnu'. The characterization of the antagonist in Kanithan too heavily resembles Vidyut Jamwal in Thuppakki. Although the setup and execution are interesting, it gives a feel of watching a rehashed version of Thuppakki. The director also must have trimmed down all the songs because they are totally unnecessary for the film and now, it has turned out to be speed breakers. The bottom-line is Kanithan is a one time watchable action thriller, if the makers trim down the songs, the film might get a 'hit' status.
days agoKathirIf you manage to tolerate the first 30 minutes of Kanithan, which are nothing but quite boring and monotonous romantic sequences, you are in for an exciting next 90 minutes in the movie with interesting twists and turns transcending you into the world of counterfeit certification. Santhosh has laced a good screenplay by gathering various real-life stories and come up with a solid source material which keeps you on the edge of your toes for most part of its running time. The pre-interval block pans out nicely with a superb stage set for the second half. Atharvaa as the brainy reporter shines his role as Gowtham and Catherine Tresa as Anu just serves the purpose of the role. One could easily draw comparisons between Kanithan and various AR Murugadoss films including the screenplay and editing pattern thanks to the long-standing tutelage of director Santhosh under ARM. Except for the dreary 15 minute sequence in the second half before the fag end of the climax, Kanithan is mostly an intriguing and enjoyable thriller on the big screen. Verdict - Kanithan is a tautly written thriller by debutant director Santhosh, but it comes with its own share of flaws.
