Mahalakshmi Iyer is a Tamil playback singer from India who primarily performs Tamil and Hindi songs.She has given prominent performances in the movies, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Assamese, Kannada, and Malayalam. She has performed over 1,000 tracks in various Indian regions.

Personal life


Amarendranath and Parbati Bhattacharya, singers of Carnatic classical music, were her parents, and she was born Mahalakshmi on July 11, 1976. Like her three sisters, Arpana, Padmini, and Shobha, she started studying Hindustani music at a young age. Iyer was born and raised in Mumbai and graduated from St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. To refine her pronunciation and mask any signs of a Southern accent, she enrolled in Urdu language studies there.

Career

Mahalakshmi made her singing debut alongside A R Rahman in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se (1998).She also contributed to the soundtrack for the film Dus, which marked Shankar-Ehsaan-debut Loy's as a composer. She continued working with them frequently after that. Since then, she has performed more than a thousand songs for movies, television shows, and solo albums. She collaborated with some of the biggest music composers, including A. R. Rahman, Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit, and others, on a number of popular soundtracks, including those for Mission Kashmir, Yaadein, and Saathiya.

Additionally, she contributed vocals to the majority of Yash Raj Productions' top hits, including Dhoom 2, Bunty Aur Babli, Salaam Namaste, and Fanaa, as well as their latest chart-topping albums, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. She gained notoriety throughout her career for her roles in songs like Kabhi Sham Dhale from Sur: The Melody of Life (2002), Har Taraf from Rishtey (2002), and blockbuster singles like Chup Chup Ke from Bunty Aur Babli (2005), Aaj Ki Raat from Don (2006), and Bol Na Halke Halke from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. In the movie Slumdog Millionaire, she also performed the Academy Award-winning song "Jai Ho" for A. R. Rahman (2008).
