Mandolin Srinivas Dies At 45: AR Rahman Condoles His Death
Mandolin Srinivas, whose real name is Uppalapu Srinivas, died of liver failure this morning (Friday, September 19, 2014). The 45-year-old musician was reportedly admitted to a private hospital. He was said to be undergoing treatment of liver transplant, when he breathed his last.
Born February 28, 1969, in Palakol in Andhra Pradesh, Srinivas started practicing mandolin at the age of six and his father Satyanarayana, who learned about his son's talent and interest started teaching him. While his dad's guru Rudraraju Subbaraju sang song, Srinivas used to play the mandolin. His brother U Rajesh is also an accomplished mandolin player.
Over a period of time, Srinivas mastered and skills of playing mandolin and become a prominent player of the Carnatic musical tradition of Southern India. Having played an electric mandolin, he collaborated with John McLaughlin, Michael Nyman and Michael Brook. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2010. He was a follower and devotee of Sri Sathya Sai Baba and has also performed before him on several occasions.
Young actor Rahul Ravindran, who is shocked to hear the news about Srinivas' death, tweeted, "Mandolin Srinivas no more????? How?? He was only 45! Pride of Andhra and T.N.. Shocking.. True genius.
