Singer Nithyasree's husband commits suicide

Chennai: Noted Carnatic musician Nithyasree's husband Mahadevan allegedly committed suicide by jumping into Adyar river here today (December 20). The 45-year-old Mahadevan jumped into the river from the Kotturpuram Bridge and his body had been retrieved, police said.

Police said that Mahadevan came with his driver in white Honda city around 1 pm. He asked the driver to stop the car and got out of it talking over the phone. Soon, he jumped to the river, as people shockingly witnessed the incident. They immediately alerted the fire department and ambulance.

The body was retrieved around 1.30 pm and he was declared brought dead by hospital authorities. Police said that they were ascertaining the reason behind Mahadevan's extreme step.

Nithyasree is a very popular name in the classical music circles and is the grand daughter of late DK Pattammal, a renowned singer, who was often hailed as one of the trinity of Carnatic vocalists - the other two being late MS Subbulakshmi and late ML Vasanthakumari. She has also sung many film songs.
