Aaptha Rakshaka – Review

Much-hyped and much-expected late Dr. Vishnuvardhan's 200th movie Aaptha Rakshaka, which is a sequel to his blockbuster movie Apthamitra, has hit the theatres today. Once again, Dr. Vishnu rocks the show as psychiatrist, but Nagavalli's magical charm seems to have failed to impress the audience when compared to the original.

Aaptha Rakshaka is all about unraveling the mystery of Nagavalli. Late Dr. Vishnuvardhan's performance is the main highlight of the film. Gurukiran's music, punch dialogues, Komal's comedy, beautiful locations, cinematography, costume and art are the other highlights of the movie.

Director P Vasu has tried to include enough number of twists and turns to make the movie Aaptha Rakshaka interesting. He has a tight grip over the narration too. But the story is weak, predictable and lacks freshness. Besides blending the seriousness of Ramachandra Acharya with comedy of Vishnu-Komal, the director has also managed to include a few action scenes.

Although the movie is the sequel of Apthamitra, it has only three characters like Psychiatrist, Nagavalli and Ramachandra Acharya are taken from original and the others are replaced by new ones. The storyline and the theme are same as in the original. The movie begins with the death of a painter after he takes a painting of Nagavalli home. Later the painting is moved to a family in Mysore. Here Nagavalli appears in the form of a snake.

Just like Apthamitra, the first half of the movie introduces all the character. Vishnu-Komal's comedy is very interesting in it. Although director P Vasu has included several scenes that create curiosity, it lacks innovation and is a little rigid, when compared to Apthamitra. But director rocks the show with the story of Vijay Rajendra Bahadoor, the king of Ramnagar Empire, in the second half. The climax is really wonderful.

Story: A family in Mysore is disturbed by a painting of Nagavalli and master of the home (Shrinivasmurthy) contacts Ramachandra Acharya (Avinash). And Acharya decides to take the help of Captain Vijay (Vishnuvadhan), a psychiatrist, to solve the problem. Captain collects brief information about the family members before coming to their home. He stuns them at his very entry by revealing their psychology. How he unravels the Nagavalli mystery should be watched on screen.

As usual, Vishnuvardhan has delivered a energetic performance even at 60. He impresses the audience in all fight, comedy and serious scenes. Avinash is wonderful as Acharya. Sandhya, Vimala Raman, Ramesh Bhat, Shrinivas Murthy, Bhavana, Komal Kumar and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy are also good in their respective roles.

Gurukiran's music is another highlight of the movie, but it lacks the charm that existed in Apthamitra. The movie has six songs and 'Chamundi Tayiyane Nanendu Nimmone...' is excellent and it echoes in the viewers' minds long after they leave cinema hall. The camera work, art and costume designing are also commendable.

The movie Aaptha Rakshaka does not offer anything extraordinary when compared to the original. But one should not miss ot see the last and the best performance of Dr. Vishnuvardhan, who died of heart attack on 30th December 2009.
