Shalini
Usha
Nair's
Malayalam
movie
Akam,
which
was
premiered
at
the
Dubai
International
Film
Festival
in
December
2011,
has
finally
seen
daylight
today.
Actor
Fahad
Fazil
had
completed
this
movie
before
he
released
his
recent
10
movies.
Although
it
has
nothing
much
to
boast
about,
the
movie
will
do
well
at
the
Box
Office
counters
due
to
the
star
power
of
the
actor.
Akam
is
a
suspense
thriller.
It
is
an
adaptation
of
Malayattoor
Ramakrishnan's
famous
novel
Yakshi,
which
has
already
been
brought
to
the
big
screen
by
director
KS
Sethumadhavan
with
Sathyan
and
Sharada
playing
the
lead
roles.
When
compared
to
the
first
adaptation,
the
latest
one
looks
quite
poor
and
nowhere
near
to
it.
Fahad
Fazil
and
Anumol's
fantastic
performance
is
the
main
highlight
in
the
movie.
Shalini
Usha's
interesting
screenplay,
Deepak-Murari's
superb
music
and
background,
Christopher
John
Smith's
brilliant
cinematography,
costumes,
makeup
and
lighting
are
main
highlights
of
the
movie.
But
at
times,
the
movie
may
bore
the
viewers
in
some
places
due
to
its
slow
and
dragging
narration.
Akam
is
the
directorial
debut
of
Shalini
Usha
Nair
and
she
has
taken
challenging
step
by
adapting
Yakshi
onto
big
screen.
Although
the
movie
does
not
bear
the
kind
of
quality
that
existed
in
KS
Sethumadhavan's
version,
she
should
be
applauded
for
the
kind
of
work
she
has
done
in
her
first
film.
With
her
arresting
narration,
she
is
successful
in
making
the
audience
sit
on
the
edge
of
the
seat
and
watch
the
movie.

Sreenivasan
aka
Srini
(Fahad
Fazil)
is
a
young
architect,
who
is
in
love
with
Tara.
But
Tara
dies
in
an
accident
and
he
is
left
with
scars
on
his
face.
When
he
was
losing
his
confidence
and
leading
a
secluded
life,
the
beautiful
lady
Ragini
enters
his
life.
Ragini
gives
him
a
new
life
by
marrying
him.
But
after
marriage,
Srini
doubts
her
true
identity
and
he
starts
suspecting
her
to
be
a
Yakshi
(demon).
What
happens
next
will
form
the
crux
of
Akam.

Fahad
Fazil
and
Anumol
have
given
their
best
performance
in
the
movie
Akam.
But
when
compared
to
that
of
Sathyan
and
Sharada
in
the
previous
version
of
Yakshi,
it
does
not
look
up
to
the
mark.

Deepak
Raghu
and
Murari
Vasudevan's
music
is
the
main
highlight
in
the
technical
front.
Their
soundtracks
are
melodious
and
soothing.
Their
background
score
obviously
elevates
many
emotional
and
horror
scenes.
Christopher
John
Smith's
camera
work
is
also
brilliant
and
helps
the
director
to
depict
her
mind
on
screen.

Movie
Review
Overall,
Akam
is
a
good
experiment
by
debutant
director
Shalini
Usha
Nair
and
it
has
all
sound
production
values
to
make
you
feel
that
you
are
watching
horror
movie.
If
you
have
not
watched
KS
Sethumadhavan's
version
of
Yakshi,
don't
miss
to
watch
this
movie.
