Karthi
was
once
billed
as
the
next
star
of
Kollywood.
His
series
of
hit
movies
in
his
first
four
years
in
the
industry
made
people
keep
high
expectations
from
him.
But
his
wrong
choices
of
films
have
put
his
career
under
threat.
Seriously,he
is
now
trying
to
get
back
to
his
good
form
with
Pa.Ranjith's
Madras.
Madras
has
not
been
promoted
extensively
like
some
of
his
recent
flicks.
But
the
audio,
trailer
and
the
promotional
materials
have
managed
to
draw
public's
attention.
The
story
is
set
in
North
Madras
and
it
is
not
just
a
usual
three-songs-two-fights-commercial
entertainer.
The
atmosphere
here
is
realistic
in
which
the
hero
plays
the
role
of
an
IT
professional.
The
film,
which
was
ready
in
June,
is
finally
seeing
the
light
of
the
day
today
(September
26).
The
film
has
Catherine
Tresa,
Imman
Annachi,
Kalaiarasan
Harikrishnan
and
others
in
the
cast.
Madras
has
Santhosh
Narayanan's
music
and
G.Murali's
cinematography
with
Praveen
KL's
editing.
Now,
let
us
move
towards
the
review...
If
a
movie
sets
in
the
backdrop
of
Madurai
or
North
Chennai,
one
would
easily
believe
that
the
films
would
have
subtle
amount
of
violence
and
its
true.
But
director
Ranjith
is
not
just
selling
another
bloodshed
story
rather
he
has
churned
out
a
story
which
deals
with
love,
friendship
and
war.
And,
he
tries
to
give
a
different
view
of
North
Chennai.
Rating:
3.5/5
The
political
parties
violently
fight
to
outdo
each
other
and
lock
horns
over
a
wall,
which
becomes
a
key
object
to
fuel
their
rivalry.
Amidst
this,
Kaali
(Karthi),
a
simple
man,
loves
to
lead
a
happy
life.
He
is
in
love
with
a
girl
and
it
gives
a
twist
to
his
life.
The
story
traverses
on
dirty
politics,
romance
and
betrayal.
Finally,
ends
up
with
revenge.

Story
Analysis
–
First
Half
The
story
and
the
settings
are
realistic.
The
North
Chennai
atmosphere
can
be
felt
instantly
in
the
film.
The
action
quotient
is
high
in
the
film
and
the
pre-interval
segment
is
brilliant.
Story
Analysis
-
Second
Half
While
the
first
half
is
well-written
and
holds
your
attention
through
out,
the
second
half
turns
out
to
be
just
an
average
affair.
It
is
mainly
because
audience
get
a
clue
of
what's
going
to
happen
in
the
climax.
Performance
Karthi
has
kept
himself
low-key
after
his
delivering
a
series
of
flops.
And
Madras
is
given
minimal
promotions,
which
comes
as
a
big
advantage
for
him
as
people
watch
the
film
with
less
expectations.
Hence,
it
easily
makes
audience
appreciate
the
film
and
mainly
his
performance.Catherine
Tresa
appears
without
makeup
in
the
most
part
of
the
film
and
makes
quite
a
impact.
Kalaiarasan
steals
the
show
as
Anbu
and
remaining
characters
too
have
played
their
parts
well.
Tech
Departments
Santhosh
Narayanan
once
again
stuns
you
with
his
collection
of
music.
Apart
from
a
few
songs,
he
impresses
audience
with
background
score.
Cinematography
by
Muralu
is
top
notch
and
editor
Praveen
is
at
his
best.
Drawback
&
Verdict:
Director
Ranjith,
after
penning
a
good
story,
has
tried
to
forcefully
add
commercial
elements.
Overall,
Madras
is
a
gritty
revenge
drama
that
cannot
be
missed
by
cine
goers.
