Appa

is

Directed
and
Produced
by
Samuthirakani,
Appa
has
its
music
scored
by
'Isaignani'
Ilaiyaraaja.
Samuthirakani
had
earlier
said
that
the
film
has
the
potential
to
travel
to
every
nook
and
corner
of
India.
Is
the
movie
worthy
enough
to
be
remade
in
11
other
languages,
as
claimed
by
the
actor-filmmaker?

Appa
Plot:
The
movie
is
about
three
fathers
with
different
mindsets
and
how
that
reflects
on
the
way
they
raise
their
respective
kids.
Samuthirakani
is
that
cool
dad,
every
child
would
love
to
be
raised
by.
He
understands
that
education
alone
cannot
decide
his
son's
success.
Freedom
is
something
his
son,
played
by
Vignesh
of
Kaaka
Muttai
fame,
befriends
and
is
aided
by
his
father
to
realize
his
own
dreams.
Thambi
Ramaiah
on
the
other
hand
is
the
exact
opposite.
He
is
that
typical
father,
who
asks
his
son
to
focus
only
on
education
and
wants
him
to
fulfil
the
dreams
of
his
father.
Namo
Narayana,
the
third
dad
portrayed
in
the
movie,
is
dispassionate
about
his
son.
He
neither
guides
him
to
realize
his
dream,
nor
encourages
him
to
focus
on
his
studies.
How
does
these
three
styles
of
parenting
affects
the
growth
of
their
kids,
is
what
forms
the
cruz
of
this
story.
Performances:
As
expected,
Samuthirakani
has
done
what
he
does
best.
A
neat,
realistic
performance
is
what
you
get
from
this
experienced
actor.
Thambi
Ramaiah
gets
a
meaty
role
and
the
seasoned
player
has
made
most
use
of
it.
His
character
will
infuriate
you
in
the
beginning
and
then
will
make
you
empathize
with
it
in
the
end.
Such
is
his
performance.
Namo
Narayana
too,
has
come
up
with
a
commendable
act.
Among
the
kids,
Vignesh,
Gabriella
and
Yuvalakshmi
have
outshone
others.
Technicalities:
Dialogues
serve
as
both
positives
and
negatives
of
Appa.
While
most
of
them
are
written
well,
which
creates
a
social
awareness
on
how
to
raise
a
child,
some
of
them
sounds
preachy
and
irrelevant
to
today's
lifestyle.
Cinematography
by
Richard
M
Nathan
has
made
sure
the
film
is
visually
appealing.
Background
score
by
Ilaiyaraaja
is
surprisingly
a
let
down.
Though
the
film
is
packed
with
inspiring
messages
to
parents,
which
gets
melodramatic
at
times,
a
screenplay
sans
twists
and
turns
might
make
it
difficult
for
you
to
be
completely
engrossed.
Overall
View:
Samuthirakani's
intention
to
deliver
a
meaningful
film
is
praiseworthy.
But,
we
have
already
seen
similar
movies
and
Appa
needs
something
special
to
stand
out
from
the
rest.
